We have a library.

We're currently compiling a coffee library on the site. It contains flavors and coffee varieties at the moment.

A snippet:
"Coffee variety (often referred to as “varietal” or “cultivar”) refers to a cultivated coffee plant that, when propagated, maintains specific characteristics both in plant morphology (size, shape, etc.) and in flavor characteristics of the end product.

"There seems to be great confusion regarding varietal vs. species. Without going into an extended explanation, species is a broader taxonomic category that refers to coffee varieties that are capable of cross breeding with one another. There are MANY species of coffee - we know of at least 100 documented species. The two most commonly cultivated species are Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora (usually referred to by “robusta”, its most common variety). Below is a brief list of other species:

  • Coffea liberica
  • Coffea kapakata
  • Coffea congenesis
  • Coffea racemosa
  • Coffea excelsa
  • Coffea bengalenesis"

If there's anything anyone wants to see or have us research, let us know.

Esmeralda Special 2008 (Hacienda La Esmeralda - Panama)

Immediately following last year’s harvest, the owners of Hacienda La Esmeralda decided to do something a bit different for this year’s crop. In a first-of-its-kind auction, the farmers decided to sell their geisha crop in a standalone auction. No other farms were involved. No other coffees were involved. This was entirely 2008 Esmeralda Special. The auction was scheduled to last one hour, but because of the immense interest, the auction entered extended bidding and went on for nine hours. This auction will set precedent for future auctions, allowing farmers the chance to let their coffee truly shine and thus, reach new price levels, fairly compensating farmers for their hard work and dedication.

Nicaragua CoE Matagalpa - La Gloria / Limoncillo

This washed and sun-dried coffee comes from the sister farms La Gloria/Limoncillo. It is a JavaNica varietal, tasting like both an Ethiopian (citrus) and Java coffee (heavy body), yet at the same time, tasting like something completely all its own.

Prior to its cultivation, this coffee was an experiment, locked in a private research lab grown for years in hidden gardens containing Ethiopian and Indonesian cultivars. The cultivars can be traced back to Ethiopian varietal lines of both the Rambung and Abyssinia, which found themselves in Java in 1928 by the hands of the Dutch. People knew little of this experiment and less knew what it would bear. That is until Nicaragua faced political instability and the operation was shut down. Then, “someone who knew someone” obtained the heirloom longberry seedstock before it was lost forever and placed twenty pounds of the seedstock in the hands of a small group of farmers.

Romance by Paradise Recieved 95 points

CoffeeReview.com says that "two roasters submitted blends reviewed here that push the envelope of balance toward the edges of exotic. These are houses, perhaps, but houses with unusual floor plans designed by architects of possibly fringy genius. The Paradise Roasters' Romance by Paradise blend (95) is a thorough-going success, a variant on the Mocha-Java blend, the old and honored formula that combines a fruity dry-processed coffee from Yemen or Ethiopia with a second lower-toned, richer coffee, traditionally a Java or Sumatra. Not much earth shows up here, however, and the fruit is opulent yet nearly free of ferment, making this an arguably house-blend tamed Mocha-Java."

The Story of Mokha Java

Romance by Paradise is our newest offering. It's a mokha java blend.

The Legend:

There was a boy, Adhi, from Java who helped load the Dutch ships with coffee. When the boy grew a bit older and stronger, he became a sailor.

For years, Adhi was one of many men who traveled on one of many ships from Java to the Red Sea port of Al-Makha in Yemen, bringing coffee and spices. Upon reaching port, great care was taken to keep the coffee from Java separate from the coffee of Yemen. The coffee from Java was very earthy. The coffee from Yemen was very fruity and aciditic.

Adhi would watch his coffee as it was placed on ships set for Europe. On one trip, a girl in the port stole his attention and mesmerized him. He watched her until she disappeared around a corner.

On his return to Java, Adhi could not stop thinking about the girl he had seen. For only a brief glimpse, she had captured his heart.

As chance would have it, he met the girl soon after returning to Al-Makha seven months later. Ameera was her name, and they fell in love. But Adhi could not stay. He promised to return and left. Ameera waited. Adhi never returned. His ship got lost at sea amid a storm. The girl was heartbroken.

With grief over a life she could no longer have, the girl took Java and Yemen coffees from the port and combined them to form a blend of beauty and complementary opposition.

Today, the port of Al-Makha is in ruins, but the oldest known coffee blend still survives today as Mokha Java or…Romance by Paradise.
